Registration
Can I register online?
You can pre-register online. However, we must ask you to physically visit the library and complete the registration within three months.
Reader’s card
Is the reader’s card valid for all departments?
Absolutely! Your reader’s card gives you access to all the departments in the library, so you can borrow whatever you need. And if you choose the shared reader’s card option, you can also use it in the municipal libraries and the University Library.
Can I go to the library without a reader’s card?
Of course! You don’t need a reader’s card to enter the building. You can freely enjoy everything the library has to offer, including studying books and other media, internet access for half an hour, exhibitions, and other cultural and educational programmes. The only time you’ll need the reader’s card is when you want to borrow documents to take home.
I forgot my reader’s card. Can I borrow documents without it?
Absolutely, you can! When you do, please notify our staff at the borrowing desk and present your ID or other identification document.
What should I do if I lost my reader’s card?
Please report the loss or theft of your reader’s card to us as soon as possible. We’ll block your card right away to make sure no one else can misuse it! We’re happy to issue a new reader’s card for a small fee at the library reception.
Lending and returning
How do I find out if you have a book in your collection?
The library’s online catalogue is a fantastic tool for checking the availability of a document.
Do I pay for borrowed books?
The great news is that there is only a registration fee (a regular yearly fee) and the cost of a reader’s card! The best part is that there is absolutely no charge for lending! The great news is that you only have to pay only the fee for single loans (in case you want to borrow without a reader’s card).
Can children borrow books from the adult sections?
Absolutely! If children under 15 need to borrow a document from another department, they can simply ask a member of the children department to arrange borrowing for them.
Can someone else borrow on my reader’s card?
Unfortunatelly the readers’ cards are non-transferable. We just want to make sure that everyone has a great experience using our library, so we have a rule that says the person who owns the card is responsible for any misuse of it. This rule is issued to protect our users.
How many books can I borrow?
The maximum number of borrowed documents of different types is based on our Library Rules. You can find the informations here.
Can I borrow something on an exceptional basis even if I am not a registered reader?
Yes, in this case you can use the so-called single lend.
Can someone else return the books for me?
Yes, anyone can return books for you. A reader’s card is not required to return documents.
Where can I return the books?
We’d love to see you at the reception desk or at individual departments to return any borrowed books you may have. If the library is closed, don’t worry! You can still use the biblioboxes.
Reader’s Account
What is the reader’s account for?
The reader’s account, which you log into with the barcode on your reader’s card and a password (password is automatically set as your year of birth when you first log in) is used to keep track of your loans. You can use it to extend the loan period of documents, order books for checkout and to read at Study Room, reserve a borrowed title, pay fees online, and order interlibrary lending service.
Orders, Reservations, MVS
What is the difference between a reservation and an order?
Only documents that are currently on loan can be reserved. This is a paid service, the amount of the fee is governed by the current Price List.
You can order available documents that will be ready for pick-up at the Reception desk, in case of present loans in the Study Room. We’re delighted to offer this service free of charge.
How do I cancel a reservation or an order?
You can cancel your reservation via the readers’ account or with the lovely library staff at the borrowing desks or at the reception desk. Or, if you’d rather, you can simply not come and collect the book. However, just a heads-up: if you don’t collect or cancel a ‘held reservation’ (i.e. the book is already ready for you), you’ll still be charged the reservation fee. This is because we’ve already done the work associated with the reservation. Thanks so much for your understanding!
Is it possible to order books from another library? Under what conditions?
Yes, it is possible to order documents from another library via interlibrary lending service, but only those that are not in our collection. Documents that we have but are currently on loan also cannot be ordered. You can make a request for interlibrary lending services through service Získej, the electronic request form in your reader’s account or in person in the Study Room. The library charges a flat fee for postage and packing per request for interlibrary loan service within the Czech Republic. In the case of a request for a copy, the price is set by the library handling the request. A fee is also charged for international interlibrary lending service requests. Please refer to the Price List for current fee information.
E-Books
How can I borrow an e-book?
Registered library readers can borrow e-books for free. Detailed instructions can be found here.
Do you rent e-readers?
We lend e-readers on the basis of a contract to registered users of the library over 18 years of age upon payment of a refundable deposit of CZK 1,000 for 14 days. If all the e-readers are currently on loan, we recommend making a reservation. That way, we can make sure you get to enjoy it as much as possible! Readers can be borrowed from the Information Department on the ground floor of the library, where the librarians will also be happy to help you get the app working on your device.
U Vokolků Library Centre
Are the services of the U Vokolků Library Centre only available to registered readers?
The U Vokolků Library Centre is a wonderful space where everyone is welcome and there is no charge for access. We’re delighted to welcome non-registered readers! We just ask that you register if you’re taking out an absent loan in the Music Department.
Book Donations
I would like to donate books, how should I proceed?
Thank you so much for considering donating your titles! We would be delighted to accept them, as long as the date of publication is after 2010. We do make an exception for regional literature, which we consider on an individual basis. We would love for you to send us a list of the books you’d like to donate before you come and bring them to us in person! Please include the author, title and year of publication in the email to akvizice@knihovna-pardubice.cz. If you’d like, you can even just take some photos of the books! We would be really grateful if you could avoid putting book donations in the biblioboxes.
