Readers can choose from non-fiction literature, fiction books or magazines. Each department has a wide range of titles. Registered readers can borrow books and selected periodicals. You can also borrow e-books or audiobooks.
Where to find foreign-language literature?
Our library has a wonderful selection of both fiction and non-fiction books in different languages for you to choose from. Our books are labelled with a letter next to the book’s signature, so you can quickly identify the language of the book. We’ve made it easy for you to find the language you’re looking for! We use the following letters to help you out:
- A for English
- G for German
- F for French
- I for Italian
- E for Spanish (Español)
- UKR for Ukrainian
- R for Russian
You can also find publications in Esperanto, Arabic, Latin, Polish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, Romanian, and Vietnamese. Books without a language-specific letter by the signature are written in Czech.
We recommend using our online catalog to check if we offer the publication you’re looking for in the language of your choice. You can filter documents by language or search our entire collection by language, which allows you to view everything we offer in your preferred language.

Department of Non-fiction Literature
- The Department of Non-fiction Literature is located on the 1st floor.
- In this department you will find mainly scientific literature with a focus on industry, medicine, architecture, pedagogy, history, etc.
- The collection also includes popular science literature.
- In addition to books, you can also borrow maps, dictionaries, encyclopaedias or audiobooks.
- The Department of Non-fiction Literature is organized by subject matter, rather than by language, and there is no section or shelf dedicated exclusively to foreign-language literature.
- We recommend using the catalogue to find a document that suits your interests, or you can ask our staff, who will be happy to assist you.
- Reading glasses can be borrowed for use in the Library.
- You can borrow books to take home or use our study relaxation area.
Department of Fiction Literature
- The Department of Fiction Literature is located on the 2nd floor.
- In the fiction section you will find a selection of several genres – novels, short stories, poetry, plays, detective stories, school reading, science fiction and historical novels.
- In addition to print resources, audiobooks (audiobooks on CD) are also available.
- Foreign language fiction in English, Esperanto, French, Italian, German, German, Romani, Russian, Slovak or Spanish.
- English literature is displayed on shelves situated around the corner from the entrance to the department.
- Other languages including German, French, Italian, Romani, Ukrainian, Russian or Spanish are located in the hallway next to the department entrance.
- You can search for books at home in the online catalogue or use one of the users’ computers.
- Books, audiobooks and DVD films can be borrowed on an absentee basis.
Reading Room
- The reading room is located on the ground floor of the library.
- Reading room is a space that readers can use to read the daily press, Czech or foreign magazines – nearly 4,000 titles of newspapers and magazines are available.
- You can also request photocopying services at the counter according to the current Price List.
- In addition to sitting at large tables, we offer readers the possibility of sitting in the atrium, where you can find a drinks machine.
- The library staff will be happy to help you find periodicals.
- Reading glasses can also be borrowed.
