ARRIVING
In June 2026, Radek Haňka and Tereza Šedivá from Education Department traveled to Lithuania as part of the Erasmus+ program. We were hosted by the Panevėžio apskrities Gabrielės Petkevičaitės-Bitės viešoji biblioteka, where we were invited as guest experts to lead a workshop for local librarians. Our goal was to introduce our approach to reading literacy based on creative methods we use in our library.
DISCOVERING
During the visit, we had the chance to explore the host library and the city of Panevėžys. The library space feels minimalist and clean, yet incredibly warm and welcoming. It truly comes alive through its visitors and the natural daily buzz. Far from being a silent, strictly regulated environment—though dedicated quiet study zones do exist—the overall philosophy is intentionally “live and loud.” The wide range of volunteer-led clubs running in the Panevėžys library serves as a vibrant meeting hub and a form of community education. These clubs are not isolated activities hidden away; they are a natural part of the open-plan library, which remains buzzing and active all around them.
SHARING
The highlight of our program was our workshop titled Creative Reading in Libraries: From Methodology to Experiential Practice with LEGO Six Bricks. Here, we introduced our unique approach to developing reading literacy through creative methods and experiential work with text. In the first half, we delivered a lecture placing the LEGO Six Bricks method into a broader educational context. We shared concrete examples from our own practice, our methodology materials, and various activities that bridge the gap between reading, creating, and hands-on experience. This was followed by a practical session where participants experienced a reading workshop designed for adults. Through creative tasks and LEGO Six Bricks building, they interpreted texts, shared insights, and uncovered new perspectives. Building served as a powerful tool for interpretation, reflection, and collaborative discussion.

Our time in Lithuania reaffirmed that Czech libraries have so much to offer (and not just) in the field of education—and we often tend to underestimate our own expertise. While we naturally look abroad for inspiration, many of the approaches we use daily easily hold their own in an international context and can inspire others far beyond our borders. A perfect testament to this was reconnecting with a Lithuanian colleague who had visited our library last year through Erasmus+. She was so inspired by our reading LEGO cards that she went on to create her own version, tailored to Lithuanian literature for children and young adults. We wrapped up our inspiring journey with a visit to the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania.
