Night with Andersen is an international event organized by the Children’s Libraries Club of SKIP CR, during which children spend the night in libraries, schools, and other partner institutions. Once a year, libraries, schools, clubs, and children’s homes across the Czech Republic, Europe, and even overseas open their doors to young visitors. The event is linked to the anniversary of the birth of the Danish fairy-tale writer H. C. Andersen and to International Children’s Book Day.
The overnight stay in our library took place for the fifteenth time this year. This year’s Night with Andersen was held in a royal spirit: everything revolved around Charles IV., who is celebrating the 700th anniversary of his birth this year.
On Friday, March 27, fourteen brave children aged 8 to 10 arrived to enjoy an evening full of knightly challenges and fun. The program started at 4:00 PM, and the children returned home the next morning at 8:30 AM.
What awaited them? Above all, a rare visit – King Charles IV. himself came to the library in person. The children took part in a knowledge competition, tried out a knightly tournament, created their own coats of arms, and set off to search for relics hidden in the corners of the royal library, in the dark. They were knighted as royal apprentices and, as a reward, experienced an adventurous night among the bookshelves. A feast was also provided, food and drinks for everyone were arranged by our library.
We look forward to seeing you again next year!
